Milan ready to race with Inter

MILAN (AP)—Playmaker Kaka converted two penalties to lead AC Milan to a 3-0 win over Palermo, while Juventus was held to a 2-2 draw by last-place Reggina in the Serie A.

The Brazilian scored from the spot in both halves and veteran Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi maintained his good form with his 12th goal of the season.

The victory left Carlo Ancelotti’s side seven points behind leader Inter Milan, which was playing Napoli in the late match.

Juventus continued its run of poor form, needing a dubious penalty from Alessandro Del Piero and a scrappy goal from midfielder Cristiano Zanetti.

Before the late game, champion Inter Milan is on top with 74 points, AC Milan second with 67, Juventus at 65 and Fiorentina with 58.

Genoa’s hopes of returning to the Champions League places were hit when it slipped to a 2-0 defeat away to Bologna.

Also Sunday, it was: Lecce 2, Catania 1; Sampdoria 3, Cagliari 3; Lazio 0, Atalanta 1; and Torino 1, Siena 0.

Inter cancel Adriano’s contract

* Inter and Adriano agree to terminate contract

* Move was widely expected with one year left on deal

(Adds details)

MILAN, April 24 (Reuters) - Inter Milan cancelled the contract of striker Adriano on Friday after the Brazilian said he was taking a break from the game.

“Inter announce that the contract with Adriano has been terminated by mutual consent, with effect from April 1, 2009,” a club statement said.

“The documents were registered at the Italian Football League’s offices this morning. Inter thank Adriano for his 74 goals and the eight years spent together.”

The move was widely expected with the 27-year-old’s contract due to run out at the end of next season.

Adriano, who has long been troubled by alcohol and personal problems, decided not to return to Italy at the start of the month following Brazil’s World Cup qualifiers.

He said he had lost the pleasure of playing and did not want to return to Italy and added he would stay in Brazil to rethink his career.

Inter coach Jose Mourinho overlooked the striker at the start of the season but he worked his way into the first team and helped Inter surge ahead at the top of Serie A, where they are close to sealing a fourth straight Italian title.

When he did not return from Brazil, Mourinho sympathised with Adriano rather than berate him like he had in the past.

The end of the contract makes it highly likely that Inter will buy at least another striker in the close season.

Forwards Julio Cruz and Hernan Crespo will also probably leave while top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic has expressed his frustration at Inter’s continued failure in the Champions League and could be a transfer target.

Inter have been linked in the media with Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, Genoa forward Diego Milito and Sampdoria playmaker Antonio Cassano. (Reporting by Mark Meadows and Antonella Ciancio; Editing by John Mehaffey; To query or comment on this story email sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: I Will Leave Inter One Day

Inter star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has dropped a bombshell by admitting he could walk out on the club for a new adventure with another team.

The Sweden international is tied down to the Beneamata until 2013, but he admits that he would like to try something different as fans begin to sweat over his future.

"I have a contract with Inter and I am fine here, but at the same time I would like to try something new because I have been in Italy for five years now," Ibrahimovic told Eurosport.

"I have won everything in Italy and I have learned a lot from this country. However, there comes a moment in life, like when I was at Ajax, where you tell yourself that you have to try something new."

The Nerazzurri will not be phased by the star's comments. The club have warned other sides that they will accept nothing less than €100million for their man.

Earlier this afternoon Inter terminated Adriano's contract following all his recent troubles. It will be a hammer blow if the club were to lose Ibrahimovic this summer as well.
